A house full of friends and family is a recipe for a successful holiday party this winter. But for every person in your home, there is also an added opportunity for a painful or dangerous accident. To keep all your guests, and your humble abode, safe and sound this winter, be sure to keep these safety tips in mind:
- Fire safety: Holiday decorations are usually either extra candles and lights, or dry bits of burnable objects, like tinsel and wreaths. You must keep these two forms of decoration separate from one another. To take your safety even further, do not use open flames on dinner tables and always have someone in the kitchen while food is being prepared.
- Childproofing: If there are going to be children at your party, make certain your home is prepared for them. No sharp edges, nothing small and inedible in low places, and no open pool areas. Rearrange ahead of time for someone, or a group of people, to be designated children supervisors.
- Tripping hazards: Electronic decorations all around the house mean more power cords. Do not attempt to stuff them under carpeting, where it could bunch up and cause people to trip. Instead, get a professional cord concealer or run them along walls.
- Barkeep: One of the worst dangers that can arise from a fun holiday party is overconsumption of alcohol, specifically if the consumer needs to drive home later that night. Collect keys from any drinkers and have a designated “barkeep” stay sober throughout the night and only return keys to people who are safe to drive.
Accidents Can Happen to Anyone
Even with the most careful planning, an accident can happen; the unexpected nature of an accident is right in the definition. If you are hurt while attending someone else’s party, you need to seriously consider your legal options. You may need to file a premises liability claim against them to help you pay for medical bills and lost wages as you recover.
