With the balmy temperatures of Southern California, biking is a common form of transportation and one that greatly benefits the environment. But without proper safety habits, bikes can also be extremely dangerous. One study showed that an average of two people lost their lives each day due to bicycle accidents in a single year.
So how do we prevent these accidents? Given that May is Bicycle Safety Month, it seemed like the perfect time to brush up on best biking practices for both children and adults. You never know what you’ll encounter on your bike and safety knows no age limits!
What is the “Be a Roll Model” campaign?
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) designed a safety campaign called “Be a Roll Model.” The purpose of the campaign is to encourage safe behaviors for everyone on the road, bikers included. If everyone does their part to make the road a safer place, together we can reduce accidents and minimize injuries and deaths.
Be a “roll model” by practicing the following tips:
- Always ride focused, never distracted
- Always ride prepared and expect the unexpected
- Always put safety first by wearing a helmet and maintaining your bike
- Always follow the rules of the road
- Always share the road and look out for other bikers and vehicles
Even with the best safety habits, you can’t protect yourself from everything on the road. Bicycle accidents occur each day and are often very serious. If you were injured and believe someone else is at fault, turn to our firm! We are dedicated advocates for those suffering because of someone else’s carelessness. The sooner you call, the sooner you can get your life back to normal.
