Interview with Attorney Saar Swartzon

What made you choose a career in personal injury law?

Attorney Saar Swartzon

When I was about 7, my babysitter's husband was an attorney and I got to watch him in argue court. I thought it was awesome. I saw him argue on behalf of an individual against a large corporation and I liked the fact that everyone seemed to have a fair shot by having a lawyer.

You helped obtain the 48 th largest verdict in the U.S. – tell us about the case:

Robert Treggett served this country as a nuclear trained machinist mate abroad the USS Marshall, a nuclear submarine. While working onboard, Robert was exposed to asbestos while repairing and maintaining various equipment on the Marshall. After the Navy, Robert performed home repairs using products that contained asbestos as well. Years later, Robert was diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.

I was part of a three-man trial team that tried the case against several of the manufacturers of these asbestos containing products. After a very grueling six week trial, the jury found on behalf of Robert and his wife and even awarded punitive damages. In total we received a verdict of $36,688,496. It was very gratifying to represent Robert and his wife, Linda, and hold those responsible for causing his illness and eventual demise.

Does it help to have more than a decade of legal experience?

Certainly. Albert Einstein said, "The only source of knowledge is experience." I truly believe that you learn by doing. Cohn & Swartzon, P.C. only practices personal injury law. Period. Because we practice personal injury law every single day, we gain massive amounts of knowledge about not only changes in the law, but changes in the landscape of dealing with insurance companies and even jurors and judges. This enables us to maximize the values in our cases and insure our clients are getting the legal services they deserve.

What advice do you most often give your clients & why?

I always tell my clients that they only have to concern themselves with one thing: getting well physically. Our job is to take care of everything else.

In your opinion, how does Cohn & Swartzon, P.C. differ from other firms?

We really care about making sure our clients get the best customer service possible. I am certain that our clients get contacted by someone on our team more than they would ever expect to get contacted by a law firm. We want to make sure our clients are getting well and know where their case is at every step in the process.

Tell us about an award or honor that you are particularly proud of:

I would definitely have to say being chosen as a Super Lawyer for the last five (5) years. The reason is because you are chosen by your peers. It is not an award you apply for, but something that others nominate you for.

How do you view your role in the attorney-client relationship?

Really as a one of listener first, which is really difficult for a lawyer and person who likes to talk. They say you have two ears and one mouth and you should use them proportionally. This is especially true when speaking with clients. You need to listen and hear what they have to say.

What is the first thing that you do when you take on a new case?

Actually, a lot. There are several things you have to do right at the beginning of a case but generally the most important thing is to gather as much information as you can to begin to put together your case. Determine property damage, injuries, witnesses, location of accident, insurance involved, etc. These are all key to making sure no stone is left unturned for our clients.

What types of injury claims do you specifically handle?

We handle any personal injury claim when someone's injury is caused by the negligence of another. Generally, the main component of our claims is injuries to the body–injuries you can feel. Often, these claims have psychological or emotional components attached to them as well. Most of our cases are automobile, motorcycle, pedestrian, bus, truck, and bicycle accidents, as well as dog maulings. Additionally, we have significant experience handling mesothelioma cases.

In your opinion, what is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Truly, when I get a great outcome for a client and they are really shocked. I love to see the look on their faces.

Recent Reviews From Previous Clients

  • Cohn & Swartzon took care of everything

“I am very happy to recommend Cohn & Swartzon. My two young daughters and I were hit by a teenage driver whose vehicle flipped over our SUV. Cohn & Swartzon took care of everything, from dealing with my own insurance to educating me on the importance of getting top notch medical care. We ended up obtaining much more compensation than we ever thought possible. Thank you so much!”

  • They stayed true to their word

“Let me begin by saying that I would recommend Cohn & Swartzon to anyone in need of legal advice. Both Jason and Saar are very personable and they provided a high level of service to me as their client. In addition to Jason and Saar, the entire staff always provided the utmost in service. One of the things that I liked was the fact that they stayed true to their word. They told me that they personally would take calls, if necessary. It was not very often that I needed to speak directly to them; but when I did, they were accessible. I appreciate the great lengths that they went to in working with an uncooperative doctor, who took a very long time getting a key report to them. They worked with the insurance companies and the adjusters, which took all of the unnecessary stress off of me. The Firm went to bat for me and we were successful in settling my personal injury case without going to trial. Saar was able to negotiate and reduce my medical bills, thus putting more cash into my hands. I was pleasantly surprised at the outcome, and the timing of the settlement couldn't have come at a better time.”

“I am very happy with the level of service Cohn & Swartzon provided me with during my time of need. I truly did not expect my insurance to cover my legal fees, but I am sure that Attorney Cohn and Attorney Swartzon wrote a great letter to them. I hope that I don't need an attorney ever again; but if I did, I would go back to Cohn & Swartzon. And I would definitely refer my family and friends.”

  • I was very pleased with the firm's persistence

“I highly recommend Cohn & Swartzon. When I decided to retain the Firm, I initially spoke with Attorney Jason D. Cohn. He was very knowledgeable and helpful in explaining what sort of personal injury case to expect. With the assistance of Attorney Saar Swartzon, Cohn & Swartzon were able to get me a $28,000 settlement. I was very pleased with the firm's persistence and hard work. The attorneys always kept me informed about how my case was going, they were completely honest, and offered great advice. They listened to my concerns and needs, and always made me feel like I was a high priority client. Everyone at the Firm is very friendly and caring, both as one's legal representation, and simply as individuals. Thanks again!”
